Pink Flamingo Certification guarantees a welcoming environment for all people, including gay and transgender travelers and their families.
In 2008, newly hired executive Steve Adkins of the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (MDGLCC) set out to pursue his vision for a truly inclusive Miami Beach- a city where travelers, Floridians, youth, and families could feel safe and welcome. Steve felt that communication and education on gender and orientation were essential to fulfilling this vision, which inspired him to forge a partnership with YES Institute.
“Distinguishing Miami Beach as a premier destination for work and play requires proactive steps to prepare service professionals to respond appropriately to all people. Providing education on gender and orientation is fundamental to having all patrons and employees feel welcome and valued, which is key for Miami businesses to thrive.” –Luke Jude, MA, Executive Director of YES Institute.
The pioneering Pink Flamingo Hospitality Program is a system-wide training program for the hospitality and tourism industry aimed at creating welcoming experiences for Miami Beach visitors, residents, employees, and families.
YES Institute is the sole provider of education on gender and orientation to member hotels and businesses seeking Pink Flamingo Hospitality certification. Our trainings provide an opportunity for employees to be open and honest about these topics and identify tools that create a greater relatedness with customers and co-workers. In addition to YES Institute training, MDGLCC conducts site visits and guest evaluations to complete the certification process. Participants receive a Pink Flamingo Moniker to indicate to potential guests that they are a safe and welcoming property.
